Terroir al Limit is one of Priorat's most celebrated and philosophically driven estates — a project founded by Dominik Huber and René Barbier Jr. with a mission to produce wines of absolute terroir purity from the ancient llicorella slate vineyards of this dramatic Catalan appellation. The estate farms biodynamically, harvests by hand, and vinifies with native yeasts and minimal intervention, producing wines that are as much a reflection of the land as they are of the winemaker's hand. The 'Terra del Cuques' — 'Land of Worms' in Catalan, a reference to the earthworms that thrive in the estate's healthy, biodynamically farmed soils — is one of Terroir al Limit's most distinctive and expressive white wines.
The 2019 Terroir al Limit Terra del Cuques Priorat is a white wine from one of Spain's most unexpected and compelling terroirs — a blend of Grenache Blanc and Pedro Ximénez from old vines on the estate's llicorella slate vineyards, vinified with extended skin contact and aging in old oak to add texture and complexity while preserving the wine's natural freshness. Pale gold with an amber tinge from the skin contact, the nose is complex and evolving: ripe white peach, quince, and dried apricot layered with beeswax, toasted almond, and a deep, stony, mineral note that speaks to the llicorella soils of Priorat. On the palate, the wine is rich and textured with a grippy, tannic structure from the skin contact, vibrant acidity, and a long, complex finish of real depth and persistence.
The Terroir al Limit Terra del Cuques 2019 is a wine for the adventurous and the curious — exceptional alongside grilled fish, roasted chicken, aged cheeses, or simply on its own as a meditation on what white wine can be when terroir is the only agenda.
