Orin Swift Cellars is one of California's most creative and unconventional wine producers — founded in 1998 by Dave Phinney, the winemaker behind the iconic Prisoner Red Blend, with a philosophy that prizes artistic expression and bold blending over appellation convention. The Abstract Red is one of Orin Swift's signature cuvées, a Rhône-inspired blend that draws from vineyards across California and France, united by Phinney's instinct for wines that are immediately seductive, generously fruited, and endlessly drinkable. The label's striking artwork — a different piece commissioned for each vintage — reflects the winery's belief that wine, like art, should provoke and delight in equal measure.
The 2022 Orin Swift Abstract Red is a Grenache-led blend with Syrah and other Rhône varieties, sourced from select vineyards in California and France and crafted to deliver maximum pleasure from the first pour. Deep ruby in the glass, the nose is expressive and inviting: ripe red cherry, raspberry, and plum layered with dried herbs, lavender, and a hint of spice — the signature aromatic profile of a well-crafted Rhône blend. On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full-bodied with soft, approachable tannins, a lush, fruit-forward mid-palate, and a long, smooth finish with a gentle peppery note.
The Orin Swift Abstract Red 2022 is a crowd-pleasing, versatile red — excellent alongside grilled lamb, roasted chicken, mushroom dishes, or a well-stocked charcuterie board, and a reliable choice for any occasion that calls for something a little out of the ordinary.
