The wine is a deep, dark purple with a hint of ruby at the rim. Its nose opens with vibrant floral notes of violets and lavender, complemented by hints of dark plum, blackberry, and a touch of licorice. The focus is on the rich fruit profile, with oak providing subtle support. On the palate, it’s bold and complex, featuring flavors of black currant, raspberry, boysenberry, and a dash of black pepper. Bright and savory, the wine finishes with firm, structured tannins.
Mt. Brave produces wines from the Mt. Veeder appellation, where vines thrive on steep, rugged hillsides. The name honors both the Wappo Indians, the area's original inhabitants, and the early settlers who helped shape the region. The vineyard sits at elevations between 1,400 and 1,800 feet, on land first acquired in 1841. Wine production from Mount Veeder dates back to the 1860s, with early pioneers like Captain Stalham Wing showcasing the region's potential at the 1864 Napa County Fair. Established as an AVA in 1993, Mount Veeder spans 25 square miles but only 1,000 acres are planted to grapes, producing some of Napa's lowest yields. Known for its rugged terrain and thin, rocky soils, the mountain's steep slopes and varying exposures create micro-climates ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Cool maritime influences from San Pablo Bay help moderate temperatures, contributing to a slow-growing season and late harvests, resulting in wines of exceptional quality.
