Marques de Riscal Baron de Chirel Rioja 2018

Barón de Chirel represents the pinnacle of Marqués de Riscal’s winemaking and is one of the benchmark wines of modern Rioja. First produced in 1986, it was conceived as a more concentrated, age-worthy expression of the region, crafted from exceptionally old, low-yielding vines and produced only in select vintages.

The 2018 is predominantly Tempranillo sourced from vines approximately 80–110 years old and aged for 18 months in French Allier oak. Powerful yet remarkably polished, it opens with layers of black cherry, blueberry and blackcurrant, followed by violet, graphite, licorice and savory woodland notes. With air, nuances of clove, black pepper, cocoa, tobacco and leather emerge. The palate is concentrated and structured, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and an exceptionally long, elegant finish.

Already compelling with time in a decanter, Barón de Chirel 2018 has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully for decades. Pair with prime rib, grilled ribeye, roasted lamb, braised short ribs, duck, game, Jamón Ibérico or aged Manchego.
