Garofoli is one of the most historic and respected family wineries in Italy's Marche region. Founded in the late nineteenth century and now led by the fifth generation of the Garofoli family, the estate has played a significant role in elevating Verdicchio from a local specialty to one of Italy's most celebrated white wines. Their philosophy combines deep regional roots with a commitment to showcasing the unique expressions of Marche's diverse terroirs.
Based in Castelfidardo, Garofoli has long been associated with Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, but the creation of Supèra reflects the family's desire to explore the neighboring Matelica appellation. The wine is sourced from vineyards in the higher elevation Esino River valley, where cooler temperatures and mountain influences produce grapes with exceptional freshness and complexity. Fermentation and aging take place primarily in stainless steel to preserve purity, aromatics, and the distinctive mineral character of the fruit.
Verdicchio di Matelica is one of Italy's premier white wine appellations and is located inland within the Marche region along the Apennine foothills. Unlike the more maritime Castelli di Jesi zone, Matelica experiences a cooler continental climate and greater day to night temperature swings. These conditions help preserve acidity and aromatic intensity, resulting in wines that are often more focused, mineral driven, and structured. The valley's elevated vineyards consistently produce some of the most age worthy and distinctive expressions of Verdicchio.
The 2023 Supèra Verdicchio di Matelica offers an elegant balance of fruit, freshness, and mineral depth. Aromas of pear, peach, citrus blossom, green apple, and sweet almond rise from the glass alongside subtle floral and stony notes. The palate is crisp and energetic with flavors of lemon oil, tangerine zest, white peach, fresh ginger, fennel, and wet stone. Bright acidity carries the wine through a long, saline finish accented by the classic almond note that makes Verdicchio so distinctive. The overall impression is vibrant, refined, and remarkably expressive of Matelica's mountain influenced terroir.
Supèra is a versatile food wine that excels alongside seafood and vegetable driven dishes. Pair it with grilled shrimp, seared scallops, roasted branzino, linguine with clams, or seafood risotto. Its freshness also complements spring vegetables, asparagus, herb roasted chicken, and mild cheeses. The wine's mineral character and citrus driven acidity make it especially appealing with Mediterranean cuisine, while its texture allows it to handle richer preparations that might overwhelm lighter white wines.
