The 2016 Château Pontet-Canet, a fifth-growth that rivals the top Bordeaux wines, is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. It was aged for 16 months, with 55% in new French oak, 15% in two-year-old barrels, and 35% in cement amphorae. It shows a deep ruby hue at introduction, and offers a bouquet of ripe blackcurrant, dark plum, crushed stone, and graphite, with hints of violet, warm spices, leather, and cloves adding complexity. On the palate, it’s robust yet elegant, offering layers of black cherry, earthy minerals, and a touch of fresh herbs, leading to a long, smooth finish. With excellent aging potential, this wine promises to develop beautifully in the cellar.

The Pontet-Canet estate was originally named after Jean-Francois Pontet, who purchased the property in 1750 and retained ownership until it became a fifth-growth classified estate. It was then owned by Herman Cruse, whose family expanded the vineyard and estate grounds for over a century. In 1975, the estate was acquired by Guy Tesseron, a Cognac producer, whose wife was a Cruse. The estate sits on elevated land, rising to 98 feet, allowing for underground cellars similar to those in Champagne.
