The iconic Cos d’Estournel château, with its distinctive, Eastern-inspired turrets, was built by the eccentric Louis Gaspard d’Estournel as a personal storehouse for his wines. His love for wine matched his passion for Arabian horses, trading wines overseas in exchange for stallions. Some wines returned from India with connotations of dreams and travel, adding to the château’s mystique. Financial troubles led d’Estournel to sell the estate, which eventually came under the care of the Ginestet and Prats families. Today, Michel Reybier oversees its 274 acres, where Cabernet Sauvignon thrives on gravelly hilltops, and Merlot on limestone-rich soils. Known for its refined tannins and velvety fruit, Cos d’Estournel produces a distinctive second-growth wine.
