Brendel is a modern Napa project tied to the Heitz Cellar/Lawrence Wine Estates family, named after early Napa vintner Leon Brendel. The idea is to make expressive, organically farmed wines with minimal interference. Winemaking is led by Heitz’s team (Brittany Sherwood), and the house style avoids new oak to keep things pure, bright, and true to site, while still nodding to classic Napa heritage. Their Cooper’s Reed bottling embraces heritage techniques including aging in large upright oak casks sealed with reeds to preserve bright, primary fruit characteristics rather than heavy oak influence. Fruit for this wine is sourced from prized North Coast sites across Napa and Sonoma, including Rutherford, St. Helena, Howell Mountain, and Sonoma Mountain, with diverse soils contributing to complexity and structure. This modern yet old-school Napa Cabernet reflects both terroir expression and approachable style, making it a standout among New World red wines.
The 2021 Cooper’s Reed Cabernet Sauvignon is a balanced, classically shaped Cab blend (approximately 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petite Sirah, 1% Merlot) that showcases vibrant black cherry, blackberry, and dark plum fruit with nuanced hints of dried herbs, star anise, and spice from careful fermentation and aging. Harvested under cool conditions and matured for about 9 months in large neutral oak vessels, the wine delivers fresh, juicy acidity, supple tannins, and a silky texture that makes it both approachable and structured. Its California Cabernet profile balances expressive fruit with refined length, making it a great pairing with grilled meats, hearty pastas, and rich cheeses.
