Founded in 1818 in the village of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Billecart-Salmon is one of Champagne's last great family-owned houses — now in its seventh generation and never acquired by a luxury conglomerate. Named after its founder Nicolas-François Billecart and his wife Elisabeth Salmon, the house has built its reputation on wines of extraordinary finesse and longevity, prioritizing precision over volume. The Cuvée Nicolas-François Billecart is the house's flagship prestige Champagne, produced only in the finest vintages and widely regarded as one of the most age-worthy wines in the entire Champagne region.
The 2008 vintage is considered by many critics and collectors to be one of the greatest Champagne vintages of the modern era — cool, taut, and built for decades of cellaring. This prestige cuvée blends Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, aged for many years on the lees before disgorgement, resulting in a wine of breathtaking complexity and tension. Brilliant pale gold with an exceptionally fine, persistent bead, the nose reveals white flowers, fresh brioche, lemon curd, green apple, and a deep chalky minerality. On the palate, the wine is electric — precise acidity, flavors of citrus, toasted hazelnut, and cream, building to a finish of remarkable length and mineral purity.
The Billecart-Salmon Nicolas-François 2008 is magnificent with fine seafood — oysters, langoustines, or turbot in a beurre blanc — and equally exceptional alongside pan-seared scallops, white truffle risotto, or simply as an aperitif for a truly special occasion.
