Producer
Argiano is one of Montalcino's oldest and most celebrated wine estates, with a history dating back to the late sixteenth century. For more than four hundred years, its vineyards have produced wines that reflect the exceptional terroir of southern Tuscany. The estate entered a new era in the 1990s under the guidance of legendary winemaker Giacomo Tachis, the visionary behind iconic wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. Today, Argiano continues its commitment to excellence under the ownership of Brazilian entrepreneur André Santos Esteves, producing elegant, terroir driven Brunello that consistently ranks among the appellation's finest expressions of Sangiovese.
Winery
Located on the southwestern slopes of Montalcino, Argiano farms organically certified vineyards rooted in galestro, limestone, and ancient marine soils. The estate's proximity to the warmer Mediterranean influences of the Maremma coast allows the grapes to achieve exceptional ripeness while retaining freshness and balance. Every vineyard parcel is managed individually to express its unique character, and the wines are crafted with gentle extraction before aging for more than two years in large Slavonian oak casks. The result is a Brunello that combines traditional craftsmanship with remarkable purity, structure, and longevity.
Region
Montalcino is one of Italy's most prestigious wine regions and is devoted exclusively to Sangiovese for Brunello di Montalcino. Located south of Siena, the appellation enjoys abundant sunshine, varied elevations, and a wide diversity of soils that allow each subzone to develop its own distinctive personality. The southwestern sector is particularly prized for producing Brunello with generous fruit, refined tannins, and impressive depth while maintaining the vibrant acidity that gives the wines their extraordinary aging potential. This balance of richness, freshness, and structure has established Montalcino as one of the world's great homes for age worthy red wine.
Wine Profile
The 2021 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino is an outstanding expression of a highly acclaimed vintage that beautifully balances power with precision. Aromas of black cherry, wild blackberry, dried rose, lavender, blood orange, Mediterranean herbs, tobacco, and sweet spice emerge from the glass with remarkable purity. The palate is layered and energetic, offering ripe red and black fruits framed by vibrant acidity, silky tannins, and notes of licorice, cocoa, crushed stone, and earthy minerality. The exceptional 2021 growing season produced wines of remarkable concentration and aromatic intensity while preserving freshness and elegance. The finish is long, savory, and beautifully focused, suggesting decades of graceful evolution while remaining surprisingly approachable in its youth.
Pairing Ideas
Argiano Brunello is a natural partner for rich Italian cuisine and memorable occasions. Pair it with bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised short ribs, roasted lamb, osso buco, wild boar ragù, mushroom risotto, or truffle dishes. It is equally outstanding alongside aged Parmigiano Reggiano and Pecorino Toscano. While already captivating today with proper decanting, this is a Brunello built to reward patience, developing even greater complexity over the next fifteen years or more.
