Domaine Saint Nicolas is one of the Loire Valley’s most celebrated biodynamic estates, founded by Thierry Michon in the Fiefs Vendéens, a small and little known appellation on France’s Atlantic coast south of the Loire estuary. Michon is a passionate advocate for the indigenous varieties and unique terroir of this windswept coastal region, farming his vineyards biodynamically since the early 2000s and producing wines of extraordinary purity and mineral character that have earned him a devoted following among natural wine enthusiasts and critics worldwide. The Brem lieu-dit is one of the appellation's most prized sites, its ancient schist and granite soils producing Pinot Noir of a freshness and mineral intensity that is unlike anything found elsewhere in France.
The 2017 Domaine Saint Nicolas Pinot Noir Fiefs Vendéens Brem is a wine of genuine originality and terroir expression, a coastal Pinot Noir that bears little resemblance to the more familiar expressions of Burgundy or Oregon yet is no less compelling for its individuality. Translucent ruby in the glass, the nose is fragrant and precise, revealing fresh red cherry, raspberry, and dried rose petal layered with distinctive saline, iodine tinged minerality that speaks unmistakably to the Atlantic’s proximity. On the palate, the wine is light-bodied and elegant, with fine tannins, electric acidity, and a long, mineral finish of real persistence and character.
The Domaine Saint Nicolas Pinot Noir Brem 2017 is exceptional alongside grilled sardines, roasted sea bass, duck breast, or a simple charcuterie board, a genuinely unique French Pinot Noir that rewards curiosity and a sense of adventure.
