Catherine et Pierre Breton are among the Loire Valley’s most beloved and influential natural wine producers, pioneers who have been farming biodynamically in Bourgueil since the 1980s, long before natural wine became fashionable. Their estate in Touraine is a benchmark for what Cabernet Franc can achieve in the Loire, producing wines of extraordinary purity, freshness, and terroir expression with a deep respect for the land and without compromise. The Bretons are as much philosophers as winemakers, and their belief that great wine begins in the vineyard and requires minimal intervention in the cellar is evident in every bottle they produce.
Les Perrières is one of the Bretons’ most celebrated single vineyard Bourgueil bottlings, sourced from a lieu dit whose name, The Stony Place, speaks to the flinty mineral character that defines wines from this site. The 2018 vintage in the Loire was warm and generous, and Les Perrières reflects that character with a depth and concentration unusual for Bourgueil. Bright ruby in the glass, the nose is fragrant and complex, revealing fresh red cherry, raspberry, and violet layered with pencil shavings, dried herbs, and the distinctive flinty minerality that is the hallmark of this vineyard. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied and precise, with fine tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long mineral driven finish marked by elegance and persistence.
The Catherine et Pierre Breton Bourgueil Les Perrières 2018 is exceptional alongside roasted chicken, grilled salmon, mushroom dishes, or a classic Loire charcuterie board, a natural wine of genuine character and one of the Loire’s finest expressions of Cabernet Franc.
